Sorry about the light posting lately. A combination of actual work and fitful pulses of a social life have distracted me from my most important obligation -- blogging.
Anyway, in a few days I plan to set off for a trip to the Allgäu, on a mix of business and pleasure. I'm gonna bring my bike with me to Ulm, then bike down the Danube until around Memmingen. My schedule is pretty flexible.Does anyone have any particular tips for things to see, taste, drink, have stamped, or do in this area? All suggestions are welcome!
Blogging may (continue to) be light, obviously...
There is a Radweg along the Iller. You can make the way from Ulm to Memmingen within one day, if you are in a hurry. www.fahrrad-tour.de/Illerradweg/Iller1.html
In general, the Iller valley is rather densely populated - compared to the area around, not compared to Düsseldorf. If you have time, leave it and ride a little more east (Bavaria) or west (Württemberg).
Less famous than Ottobeuren, but a nice place is Roggenburg abbey, with a great organ; it’s about 30 km south west of Ulm. I’d choose Roggenburg for a second reason: The beer garden at the brewery of the Kolb family in Meßhofen, close to the abbey. This place covers “see” and “drink”.
For “taste” see here: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwäbische_Küche

There are two nice places I know - depending on what you like to see. One is a bit off your route down the Iller: The Blautopf in Blaubeuren. Still, it is a nice area and a natural wonder of the world.
Not far from Memmingen (which of course is quite nice in itself) you can go and see Ottobeuren abbey, one of the most gorgeous Rokoko churches if you like Rokoko style. If you go there, you should also see the library in the monastery.

Actually you can't bike down the Danube from Ulm to Memmingen. You will rather bike up the Iller that joins the Danube in Ulm.
In Ulm I recommend to visit the Minster and the "Fischerviertel", both on the way to the Danube.
When leaving Ulm, make sure you drive on the bavarian side of the Danube: As you can see on a map, the Iller comes up from the south and there is no bridge in the area of the mouth. Staying in Baden-Württemberg, you would drive up the Danube.
Enjoy your trip!
