Ha! Being a diehard Balehead, I am thrilled that you found this underrated movie and appreciated it! It's one of my absolute favourites.

The film didn't touch me as deeply as some of Herzog's other work, especially "Jeder für sich und Gott gegen alle," his take on the enigma of Kaspar Hauser. But Bale's acting, as usual, is brilliant.

I saw Bale in two other films just before watching "Rescue Dawn," "The Prestige" and "The Machinist," and both blew me away.

To clarify brian's comment, Flucht aus Laos, known in English-speaking countries as Little Dieter Needs to Fly, is a documentary by Herzog about pretty much the same events.

AKA "Little Dieter Learned To Fly" will check out the movie version. I'm still recovering from Herzog's "Grizzly Man"(2005)
