The second paragraph sums up the problem of literary translation. There's little money in it. You need to be an academic with a monthly paycheck and a grad student assisting with the scut work of revision and terminological verification.

Or else it is a labor of love, which, in the better cases, it always is. Hat's off to Constance Garnett and Ralph Manheim and many others.
