» The Flaws of Some Anti-Anti-Americanism from Atlantic Review
Andrew Hammel has reviewed Andrei Markovits' latest book Uncoth Nation, which identifies three pitfalls of anti-anti-Americanism: 1. Defensive denial/Complete identification. The anti-anti-American becomes so fed up with the super [Read More]

Blogs are good for every one where we get lots of information for any topics nice job keep it up !!!

Why waste time on anti-americansim??? The same reason why we should waste time on all irrational feelings and prejudices !!!

In these comments, some have inquired as to why European anti-Americanism is worthy of concern. I posit that, in order to understand the growing relationship between the common Englishman/German/Frenchman/etc. and American due to globalization, this is a topic to consider. Furthermore, it is crucial to point out the follies evident throughout anti-Americanism, notably the folly of the stereotype. Anti-Americanism is a stereotype unlike any other in that it is as loosely founded in reason as racism or religious intolerance, yet it has become somewhat "trendy" worldwide.
Hating America is the cool thing to do, don't doubt it.
In this work, Markovits does an excellent job of pointing this out, notably through the various "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situations he presents.
Furthermore, Volker (a German, I'm guessing) posted "The US of A were attacked by Iraq or Afghanistan...When did that happen?" This post is blatantly ignoring a premise put forth early in the work that disagreement with policies and politicians, no matter how divisive or controversial, is not at all anti-Americanism. The fact that Bush's approval rating is lower than 30% nationwide should be more than sufficient evidence towards this point. Anti-Americanism is the dislike of what America IS, not what America DOES.
Overall it is an interesting work which does an excellent job of providing historical examples to support its various points.

No, the best example is Germany's decision not to FIGHT in Afghanistan.

As opposed to Germany's enthusiastic fighting, let's say, in the Kosovo war? :D

It seems to me I have forgotten something, maybe some of you can remind of this particular fact. The US of A were attacked by Iraq or Afghanistan?
When did that happen?

Maybe Don can enlight me?

Thank you for adding a relevant paragraph ("Markovits is aware of Katzenstein and Keohane's ...") in response to my first comment, although since your posts are not marked for changes with something like [Update:] so it makes that first comment look stupid now.

The reasons given for "why I should care about anti-Americanism" are weak though. Observations from the ground (and from pre-Bush times) tell a different story. I stand by my words.

> Gentlemen, you will learn otherwise in the fullness of time...

Hey, even among this enlightened forum the seeds are sown. The notion of impending doom may yet linger in some remote areas of my fellow posters' valued perception, but linger it does. Not all hope is lost - long live the mongers :-)))

"Markovits is aware of Katzenstein and Keohane's thesis that anti-Americanism doesn't matter very much, but argues that they underestimate its practical effects: "[D]decisions not taken because of residues of anti-Americanism, policies not implemented because of an existing though silent antipathy to America, might be as important as the visible expressions that we can measure and observe.""

No kidding. A prime example of this is not Germany's decision not to do anuything in Iraq. No, the best example is Germany's decision not to FIGHT in Afghanistan. I think the chances are quite high that this has already converted NATO into a Pometkin village of an 'alliance' with showy meetings in Bruxelles and other European resorts - and not much else.

Certainly this facet of Anti-Americanism has converted a number of formerly convinced Atlanticists in the US to something else. I personally am opposed to any US action to help defend continental Europe. The phrase 'American conditions' has taken on an ironic meaning for me, in the sense that I believe that many Germans no longer believe that America has the right to impose conditions upon US participation in NATO. Conditions such as the odd notion that certain alliance members (notably Germany and France) should be expected to lift a fingernail in support of the US when it is attacked.

No, US support for NATO is simply assumed to be axiomatic and requiring no repriocity at all.

Gentlemen, you will learn otherwise in the fullness of time....

To identify the "perfectly understandable human need to hate the big guy" as one of the main causes underlying Anti-Americanism appears to be an over-simplification. Such an assessment can be understood either as a wilfull misunderstanding or as a somewhat patronising belittlement of the persons tested. I am afraid it is the latter.

If Anti-Americanism is not confined to the "elites" but in fact a virus that has infected the "masses", then I believe this is mainly due to the US foreign policy since Clinton left the White House. The analysis thus lacks a key point which is that the masses in most non-Anglo-Saxon countries from South America across Europe to Indonesia accuse the US of uninhibited imperialism. The US, as it appears on the newschannels today, is perceived as the self-appointed dominator of the planet. That it is still probably, of all countries, the best dominator one can currently think of, is another question.

Why waste breath on anti-Americanism? Either Andrew or Markosomthing fails to mention why this is a bad thing (or rather hints at it in the historical overview) other than wasting time at dinner parties which otherwise would have been wasted on showing off their Ancient Greek.

The reason of course is, it pretty much all boils down to that, that the existence of American society threatens undermine authority. They have reached fanstastic results at considerably lower levels of authority* than Europeans in general and Germans in particular, which could make a homo sapiens scratch their head over what all their groveling was for in the first place.

No danger in Germany though where the ones that aren't authorities themselves rather than admit a colossal mistake will use anti-Americanism to justify their groveling until the end of their lives.

P.S.: In proper English, that'd be "skillful".

* Federal government's foreign policy excluded.

Zbigniew Herbert: Barbarian In The Garden
The Polish poet travels through Western Europe in the early 1960s. He's got no money, no guarantee he'll be let back into his country, and a prodigious knowledge of European history. "If the gods protect one from organized tours (through insufficient funds or strong character), one should spend the first few hours in a new city following a simple rule: straight ahead, third left, straight ahead, third right. One can follow the curve of a sickle.... I have been walking for over an hour without coming across an historical monument."
